Il
était une fois…
Fondé en 1982 du scindement de groupe Modular, Les Taches
qui, selon la légende, semblent avoir vu le jour
à Montréal sont, en fait, de
naissance… Ils ont choisi leur nom pour jeter de la peinture
sur l’homme et la femme invisible, afin de bien identifier et
maculer les préjugés, les sophismes, les
idées reçues, les personnes et les sectes qui les
propagent. Les Taches « dérangent
». Débiles peut-être,
indélébiles, sûrement !
Les Taches surviennent quand on s’y attend le moins et dans
tous les coloris : Hardcow, Twistadelic, surfacid,
grassabilly, funkypunky, Progabilly, electropoils, etc. Ils se
mélangent avec tout et toutes, et les couleurs
distortionnantes sont évidemment,
privilégiées…
Dès les premières apparitions, la
réputation s’installe…
Invités au concert des étudiants en musique du
cegep Lionnel-Groulx, ils réussissent à jouer 4
chansons avant que la police débranche tout le
système tellement le public est survolté
! Ensuite, ils bousillent la Noël de
l’élite du parti communiste du Canada en vidant la
salle en 8 chansons seulement ! Et bien sûr,
quelques premières parties de groupes connus où
les Taches « volent » le show contribueront
à étendre la rumeur…
C’est lors d’une première
tournée de 2 mois en France et Belgique, en 1986, que la
formation se fait vraiment remarquer. Deux soirées
au célèbre Gibus de Paris propulseront le groupe
au haut de l’affiche de plusieurs festivals dont le
« Festival de la Paix à Paris »,
« Rencontres du 13E type » à Lille et la
« Fête de la Musique » à
Liège. De retour au pays, ils remportent le
concours pan canadien « Rock Envol » de
Radio-Canada et participent à
l’événement « Franco-Rock
International » avec La France, la Belgique et la Suisse.
1987 fut l’année du lancement : signature chez les
Disques Isba, sortie d’un 1er single qui monte dans les
premières positions des radios, concerts en compagnie de
pointures telles que Rita Mitsouko (5 représentations!), Los
Carayos (Manu Chao), Garçons Bouchers, etc. Ils sont aussi
la seule formation francophone sur 28 participantes invitée
au « New Music Festival ». Car Les Taches sont
autant appréciées du public et des
médias anglophones que francophones.
En 1988, ils enregistrent leur 1er album, participent à la
« Bourse Rideau » et tournent au Canada participant
au « festival Franco-ontarien », au spectacle
anniversaire de Much music à Ottawa, à la
« fête Fransaskoise » en Saskatchewan et
à « l’International Festival of
Independant Music » à Toronto.
L’album « Oups…! » voit le
jour en 1989 de même qu’un premier
vidéoclip « Une Bonne Raison » qui sera
diffusé partout au Québec, Canada d’est
en ouest et même jusqu’à MTV Nashville
! Les Taches tournent au Québec ainsi que dans les
Maritimes et sont invités à se produire 2 fois au
« Festival de Woodstock » dans
l’état de New York pour le 20e anniversaire de ce
célèbre événement en
compagnie de Dr.John, The band, the Wailers, Spyro Gyra entre autres
! Ils se produisent aussi au Spectrum avec Paul
Piché et Richard Séguin pour
l’anniversaire de Musique Plus et feront un concert
mémorable au « Coup de Cœur Francophone
» en compagnie de Steve Faulkner et Rick Hayworth, concert
qui sera la base du renouveau country au Québec selon Le
Devoir !
En 1990, Les Taches, entre autres spectacles au Spectrum de
Montréal et « Contact Ontarois »
à Ottawa, feront deux tournées en France
totalisant 55 concerts ! Accueil
hystérique où la renommée les
précède, ils sont invités pendant 1h30
à Oui-fm (CHOM-fm de Paris) et font plusieurs apparitions
télévisuelles. 2 autres vidéoclips
seront diffusés (« Crier » live
& « Va Chercher ») partout et longtemps
encore sur la côte ouest. Plusieurs offres de
multinationales européennes (Warner-CBS-Sony), une autre de
Daniel Lanois pour réaliser le 2e album de même
que plusieurs demandes de concerts en Louisiane, Vancouver entre
autres, seront cependant bousillées par les Disques Isba par
incompétence, cupidité et/ou mauvaise
volonté et contribueront à éloigner le
groupe de la scène qui s’en remettra
difficilement, accumulant les changements de personnel et autres
problèmes, financiers entre autres.
Les Taches traversent les années 90 de façon
sporadique. Les maquettes du 2e album jugées trop
« Heavy » (le grunge pas encore
arrivé…) circulent dans
l’underground. Une de ces maquettes tourne beaucoup
dans les radios communautaires et se retrouvera en 1996, #1 pendant 4
mois sur les ondes de la radio universitaire CISM-fm et finira
l’année, par choix des auditeurs, 12e sur 100,
toutes catégories, styles et langues confondues.
Ils tournent un peu au Québec cette année
là.
En 2004, on les revoit avec Polémil Bazar et Les Cowboys
Fringants à la « Marche contre le Suroît
» où ils se font de nouveaux fans. Ils font une
apparition électrisante en 2005 à la St-Jean au
parc de la Promenade Bellerive survoltant les 10 000 personnes
présentes ! L’album
« Oups…! » devient une pièce
de collection très recherchée, n’ayant
pas été réédité
encore. En 2007 la formation fête son 25e anniversaire avec
plusieurs concerts dont Coup de Cœur Francophone et sortent
la série « Splash », trois albums live
enregistrés à Montréal et en France
entre 1986 & 1990. En 2008, retour en France
& Belgique + l’Espagne pour une quinzaine de
concerts. Ce groupe école où plus de 45
musiciens(nes) ont fait leurs marques, a donné à
date 300 concerts et leurs refrains imparables combinés
à leurs prestations aussi solides que
déchaînées a
indélébilement imprégné
ceux qui les ont vu. Les Taches sont là là
là pour rester…
Les Taches (the Stains) have seen
the light of day in Montreal in 1982, out of the break-up of
Modular; they chose their name to shed light on the invisible
side of men & women : their prejudices, preconceived
ideas and various « what not » that we all carry
sometimes. A rebel stain disturbs, and what more, these ones are sure
to remain indelible at that!
Les Taches seem to appear out of nowhere, in splendid and glorious
colors where we least expect them : Hardcow, Twistadelic, Surfacid,
Grassabilly, Funky Punky, Progabilly and so much more… They
blend in with anyone and everyone; of course! Distorted
colors are more than welcome…
From the start, their reputation got scorched … Invited to
Cegep Lionel-Groulx’s music students concert, they get to
play four songs until the cops come barging in and cancel the show
because of a fired-up crowd! Then, they get to ruin the
Christmas party of Canada’s Communist Party by emptying the
room in just about eight songs! And then, of course, are all
these openings for better-known bands where les Taches stole the show,
that will contribute to spread the rumour…
It’s during their first 2 months tour in France &
Belgium in 1986 that the group started getting noticed. 2
evenings at the prestigious Gibus in Paris will propel them at the
forefront of many festivals, including the « Festival de la
Paix à Paris »
« Rencontres du 13E type » in Lille and the
« Fête de la Musique » in Liege. Back to
the country, they win the 1986 pan-canadian Radio-Canada french music
contest « Rock envol » ; they get to be a Canadian
participant at the « Franco-Rock International »
event, in which also figured France, Belgium and Switzerland.
1987 was the year of their launch ; signed with Isba records, first
single, « Shakatwist » which climbs at the top of
the charts ; concerts with the likes of Rita Mitsouko (5 shows), Los
Carayos (Manu Chao), Garçons Bouchers etc… They
also are the only francophone band to figure in the New Music Festival,
along with 28 other participants. Les Taches are loved as much by the
anglophone than the francophone public.
In 1988 : recording of their 1st album and appearances at :
« Bourse Rideau » and then they tour Canada, kudos
to the «Franco-ontarian festival » ; the Much Music
anniversary show in Ottawa ; the « Fransaskoise »
fest in Saskatchewan and at the « International Festival of
Independant Music » in T.O.
The « Oups » album appear in 1989, as well as first
video « Une bonne raison »; which will play
everywhere in Quebec, Canada coast to coast, and even as far as MTV
Nashville! Les Taches tour Quebec as well as the Maritimes,
and are invited to appear, not only once, but twice at the 20th
anniversary Woodstock festival, along with Dr.John, The Band, the
Wailers the Del Fuegos and Spyro Gyra just to name a few. They also
showcase their talent at the Montreal Spectrum for Musique Plus
anniversary bash, with the likes of Paul Piché and Richard
Séguin ; will do a memorable show at « Coup de
cœur francophone » with Steve Faulkner and Rick
Hayworth, a concert that will be labeled, according to independant Le
Devoir newspaper, as the start of country music revival in Quebec !
In 1990, between shows at the Spectrum in Montreal and Contact
Ontario’s in Ottawa, les Taches will tour France twice
totaling 55 concerts. With a hysterical welcoming, they are invited at
OUI-FM (Paris’ equivalent to Montreal’s CHOM) for
an 1 ½ hour interview, and appear in many televised segments
; two more videos will be produced ( « Crier
» , « Va chercher » ) and will be
broadcasted for a long time, all along the west coast at that. Offers
from european majors (Warner, CBS-Sony) comes in, another one from
Daniel Lanois to produce their second album, and then some to play
Louisiana and Vancouver amongst others, will get wrecked by Disques
Isba’s, either incompetence, cupidity, and/or plain bad
faith, and will contribute to keeping the band offstage, which they
will difficultly recover from, accumulating personnel changes and other
problems, namely financial.
Les Taches gets through the ‘90’s in a sporadic
way. The demos for the second album are deemed « too heavy
» ; grunge has not yet arrived, but one of these demos will
seep through and play extensively on community radios, and will reach
#1 spot for 4 months on CISM-FM in 1996, and will end up 12th on a
listeners’ 100 list of faves, all styles and languages
together. They tour Quebec some that year.
Zoom to 2004 ; they are spotted along with Polémil Bazar,
and then sizzling-hot Cowboys Fringuants at « La marche
contre le Suroît », a big ecological happening
against a big-time polluting power plant project. Then they appear at
the St-Jean 2005 festivities, pumping up the 10 000 music fans present
at Promenade Bellerive. In 2007, the band played different
venues like Coup de Cœur Francophone » and released
the « Splash » serie, three live albums taped in
Montreal & France between 1986 & 1990. Fall
2008, they return to France & Belgium for 15 dates tour.
This veteran entity of a band (whose « Oups ! »
album has become a sought after collector’s item, having
never been re-issued), helped more than 40 musicians to make their mark
on the Quebec music scene, and has given close to 300 concerts in
carrer. What with their catchy chorus tradition coupled to energetic,
sometimes crazy live shows, they have made a lasting impression on
anyone who have been in contact with them ! Rebel stains, les
Taches ; they appear out of nowhere when you least expect them, and of
course, are certain to last a long, long time…
